The book, The Joy Luck Club by Amy Tan, is a genuinely inspirational book about quartette Chinese women and their four Chinese-American daughters. One of the stories in the book is called Feathers from a Thousand Li Away, which talks about the lives of the mothers when they still lived in chinaware during the war between China and Japan.

Here she knowledgeable awful things about her mother and how she was a disgrace to the family. An-mei grew up believing this tale which led to a big troth when An-meis mother came back to get her and her brother. This is where the interesting violate comes in.
A pot falls over An-mei which gives her a scar, which is what her cognomen means. This also leads to the metaphor: peel of that skin, and that of your mother, and her mother before her. Until then, thither is nothing. Lindos sacrifice though is also terrifying.
