On July 17, 1812, James Madison chose to abandon isolationism. Doing so, Congress say war on enormous Britain. Americans saw their advantage and pushed upward into Canada. But in December, they were pushed back across the border. In 1814, Napoleon was killed in Europe. Great Britain was then subject to send 15,000 tidy sums to Canada. Having this many troops outnumber the Americans, their plans to conquer Canada came to an end. Then in August of 1814, another British troop was sent to D.C., which burned down many buildings including the Capitol and the White House.

Later, a British fleet had surrendered to U.S. forces after the Battle of Lake Champlain in New York just two days before the abortive attack at Fort McHenry. Now the British had a new target, New Orleans. General Andrew Jackson was defended this state with an army that consisted of 7,000 militia troops, free African Americans, Indians, and pirates.
