A View of Polybius Views
The Romanized Greek Polybius, as we know, wrote history mainly about the rise of Rome for his fellow Greeks. Scholarly artists J.S. Richardson and P.S. Derow two support Polybius and his constitution and expectations of history, but they do so in different manners. Derow supports Polybius by actually defending him and his views from the criticism of other scholar of history, F.W. Walbank. Richardson supported Polybius more directly, and admired his intelligence and amity throughout is writing of universal history. Both of these scholars also partake in similar connections to those of John Burrows in A History of Histories, where Burrows describes Polybius as accurate and says that the usefulness of his writing of the Roman Empire and the Hannibalic contend is comparable to Thucydides writing of history.
P.S. Derow is quick to have the back of Polybius when he was confronted by ancient history scholar F.W. Walbank of his contradiction of his whimsy; Romes eastern expansion came as the witting execution by Rome of a consciously adopted plan.
(Derow 1) Walbank then goes on to state that Polybius interpretation of Roman insurance policy is inconsistent, and then makes an argument for the ancient historian Holleauxs view of the expansion of Roman power in the east is overmuch more reliable than that of Polybius. Derow defends Polybius by showing two passages from his writing of history about the Romans coming to conceive of their universal vex after their supremacy in the Punic War and that they viewed the victory as a step towards the accomplishment of this universal aim.
