WHAT:
It was for the strategic town of Ypres in western Belgium during the race to the sea.
The reason for the battle was the British trust to secure the English Channel ports and the British regular armys supply lines, as Ypres was the last major hindrance to the German advance.
The French strategy revolved around a desire to prevent German forces from outflanking the Allied front from the north.
Attacks thusly took place for weeks till the end of October between the German and the British.
This approximative fighting occurred around the town and neither the British nor the Germans could strike control of the area. Despite fearsome losses on both sides, neither could dominate the other.
The first days of November directly abnormal the town. Each day Ypres was shelled and civilian casualties were high.
By the winter, the Germans had still not taken Ypres and heavy rain and hoodwink meant that any movement was impossible.
OUTCOME: Decisive Allied victory. The debasement in weather forced the Germans to abandon the offensive on the 22nd of November.
